Celebrating 80 years of Bambi
So 2017 is the 80th anniversary of Bambi, and sadly we also recently lost Tyrus Wong who was a great influence on the artwork of Bambi, so there were several reasons to celebrate this masterpiece. The panel was moderated by Leonard Maltin himself, and among the panelists were the original voices of young Bambi and Thumper and animation legend Floyd Norman (who btw has made this awesome drawing for me), it was very interesting hearing about the creation of the movie and Leonard Maltin is always a fountain of great stories.
Alan Menken in Concert
The last thing I did at the expo was to see Disney Legend and 8 time oscar winner in concert. I did not record this myself, but someone else did, so here is a video of it.
After the concert I met up with Evan and Jessica and we decided to skip the rest of the expo and go to Disneyland.
So here are a few pics of us in disneyland.
Day two started with another huge line. Luckily the weather was great, so the waiting was fine. Here are a couple of pictures of the lines. So if you ever plan to go to D23 just be prepared to enjoy the lines.
Cosplays of the day
|Day two started as day 1 ended, with eating at Jack in a box, it was okay, and conVenient, as I still knew nothing of the area. And I can already now reveal that it was not the last time I ate breakfast there.|
|Next up I had to go to the Anaheim convention center to pick up my ticket for the expo that started the day after. This was a bit of a mess as there seemed to be no one there who knew where I was supposed to get my ticket (they do not send them to people outside the US) but after about an hour I succeded in getting my ticket… Next stop DISNEYLAND!|
Disneyland California is the original Disneyland, and as such it’s almost a pilgrimage for a disney dork, so I was pretty excited to go there. The park is (like most disney parks) split in two, Disneyland and Disneys California Adventure. I decided to save the best for last, so my first day at the parks I spent at California Adventure.
I went on a lot of different rides, one of the advantages of travelling alone is single rider lines, so I didn’t spend a lot of time waiting in lines.
I went to see the Frozen musical at the Hyperion Theatre. It was fun, I espacially enjoyed the way they made Olaf and Sven in their stage versions. In short the musical is just a short version of the first movie that of course includes the greatest hits from the film. There are a couple of videos from the musical below.
I ended my first full day in LA watching the water show Wonderful world of color, there is a video of highlights below.
Assorted pictures from day one
So today started the biggest trip I have taken alone in my life. It all started a year ago when I decided that I wanted to attend D23 Expo.
For the uninitiated D23 is Disneys official fan club, and the Expo is a comiccon like event that is totally disney centric. To some this might sound like a nightmare, but to me it’s pretty close to paradise.
So today started With me arriving way to early at the airport, so after waiting for about an hour for the luggage check in to open I went through security, got soethinng to eat and went to wait for my plane to board.
The planeride was just as long and boring as expected, but I did manage to take some pictures and video of all the different places we flew over, I can now legitemately claim to have seen Greenland.
I have heard a lot of people complain about LAX in my life, so I was kinda prepared for the worst when we landed, and it totally lived up to my expectations. It took about 2 hours to get through customs. When I finally got out of the airport I got there just in time to see my shuttle bus leave. So there was about an hour of waiting, but the weather was great and people watching at an Airport is never boring, so that hour flew by quite quickly.
I used the Disneyland shuttle service, LA traffic seems like a nightmare, but the bus driver was super friendly and showed me around nd gave me directions to the different things I had to go to fromm my hotel, so that was great.
I finally arrived at my Hotel at around 8pm, went to the Jack in a Box on the other side of the street and got some food, and then went straight to bed.
All in all thus was a day spent in transport and preparing for the awesome week ahead.
